Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market place share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market place share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.
For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular championship sold one% of all units that week, and the manufacture reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that championship. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales toll for the title in the retailers we survey.
Nosotros refine our estimates from week to week as more information becomes available. In detail, nosotros accommodate weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures volition therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles tin get upwards or down every bit we update our estimates.
Considering sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

While no movie put up huge numbers last weekend at the box office, it was an interesting one notwithstanding as a handful of films repeatedly traded places with one some other at the top of the nautical chart, finally presenting a winner in Top Gun: Maverick as the jet-fueled flick came out on tiptop of the Labor Day Holiday weekend (while also crossing the $700 million mark domestically on Monday). Theater counts: Spider-Human has no equal heading into the New year
December 30th, 2021
Once again the New year's day is right around the corner and per usual, it will be a slow weekend equally far as new releases are concerned. That said, almost films would be difficult-pressed to compete with the phenom that is Spider-Man: No Way Dwelling. The latest film featuring the webbed superhero has stunned the movie world by racking up huge numbers at the box function since its release well-nigh 2 weeks ago. The film has to engagement collected well over $1 billion worldwide, including nearly $537 million domestically and now sits at number 12 in all-fourth dimension domestic earnings; again after only xiii days. Weekend estimates: Spider-Homo rewrites pandemic rulebook with $253-million opening
December 19th, 2021
Afterwards 2 dismal years for the theatrical business, Spider-Man has returned to modify the rules of the game. Again. Back in 2002, the first Spider-Man movie ready an best record by opening with $114.8 1000000—condign the first flick to top $100 1000000 at the box function in a single weekend. That was arguably the start of the modern era at the box office.
This weekend, Spider-Man: No Style Home may be kicking off the post-pandemic era with a gargantuan $253-million opening. That'southward not only the all-time result of the pandemic. It'due south the best by a huge margin, more than doubling the opening of Venom: Allow There Be Carnage, which itself significantly outperformed expectations. Even more than impressively, it's the 3rd-best weekend of all time, behind only Avengers: Endgame ($357 million) and Avengers: Infinity War ($258 million). In fact, a skillful Sun number would take it into 2nd identify on that list.
Oh, and it's already the highest-grossing movie of 2021. More...
Theater counts: Spider-Homo swings into a stellar 4,336 theaters
December 16th, 2021
Spider-Man: No Way Domicile arrives in theaters in a large way this weekend, landing in a stellar 4,336 locations. That count places it equally the second-widest release of the twelvemonth, behind No Time to Dice'due south 4,407 and in front of Ghostbusters: Afterlife's 4,315. This latest Spider-Man characteristic once again pairs director Jon Watts and Tom Holland (as Spider-Man) from 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Dwelling; a picture show that went on to score over $one billion worldwide. Abode Market Releases for December third, 2019
December 4th, 2019
Tuesday is the solar day later on Cyber Mon, also know as, "One of the worst days of the year to release something on the home market place." At that place'due south not a lot to talk about, while the biggest release of the calendar week is also one of the biggest disappointments of the year, only the less said about that, the better. As for Choice of the Week contenders, we have Big Trouble in Petty China: Collector'southward Edition and that's it. At that place are a few other releases that are close to that level, simply none that achieve it. More...
Friday Estimates: 12 and Thieves Outset Strong with $5.66 million Apiece
January 20th, 2018
Equally expected, 12 Stiff opened in first identify on Friday. Technically it tied for first identify according to the estimates. It did practise a picayune flake amend than expected, earning $five.66 million, which puts it on stride for about $15 million over the weekend. Its reviews got a niggling flake meliorate since Thursday and are now 56% positive, while information technology is earning an A from CinemaScore. Clearly this film is connecting with its target audience. This is dandy news for Warner Bros., equally they only spent $35 million making the movie and probable a piffling under that advertising it. Stiff legs would be a expert omen for strong home market sales. On the other hand, I don't think its going to notice an audition internationally. More than...
2017 - Vacation Gift Guide - Office I - Offset-Run Releases and Franchise Box Sets
Nov 23rd, 2017
Information technology's Thanksgiving weekend, which ways Blackness Fri, Cyber Monday, and of class the first installment of our Holiday Gift Guide. This calendar week we will tackle get-go run releases, and normally franchise box sets besides, simply this year none bound out as essential additions to the Holiday Gift guide. Worse yet, 2017 has been atrocious at the box office with potential blockbuster afterwards potential blockbuster getting savaged by critics and struggling at the box office. Additionally, some of the biggest and some of the best have been on the domicile marketplace for nearly half a twelvemonth, pregnant nearly everyone who would want them, already own them. That doesn't mean in that location are no films worth calculation to this list, but the list is a niggling shorter than usual. On a side notation, two of the films on this year'south list are from the MCU and it would have been three, but Thor: Ragnarok is still in theaters. If you know someone who loves the MCU, but has all of the movies, then bank check out this site, which has some more unique gift ideas. I specifically like the Spider-homo Drone. More...
Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Spider-Man: Homecoming
October 23rd, 2017
It was a terrible summer at the box part, but Spider-Man: Homecoming was one of the few bright spots. It was one of iii films to cross $300 million domestically and has a slim shot at finishing in the pinnacle five for the year. Does information technology deserve this success? Or did it thrive just because it's function of the MCU? More...
Abode Market Releases for Oct 17th, 2017
October 18th, 2017
It is ane of those weeks. In that location's a massive release coming out, which has scared abroad nigh all of the competition, and then information technology is a actually shallow week. Fortunately, that huge release is Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is not merely ane of the biggest hits of the yr, it is besides one of the reviewed. It isn't the only contender for Pick of the Week, just the Blu-ray Combo Pack wins that accolade. More...
Weekend Estimates: Dunkirk Gives Emojis a Sad Confront
July 30th, 2017
A solid second weekend volition be enough to go along Dunkirk at the meridian of the box office nautical chart this weekend, equally The Emoji Motion-picture show falls brusque of a par operation for a family-friendly blithe film. Christopher Nolan's state of war movie volition fall 44% from it opening—a decent effigy these days—to earn $28.i million this fourth dimension around, according to Warner Bros.' projection released on Sunday morning time. That will take it past $100 million domestically today, puts it on course for around $200 million domestically in full. More...
Weekend Estimates: Dunkirk, Girls Trip Mail service Impressive Debuts
July 23rd, 2017
Dunkirk volition easily top the chart at the box office this weekend, with a $fifty.5 meg opening weekend from iii,720 theaters that'south broadly in line with expectations, and as well remarkably similar to the get-go weekend for Interstellar, which opened with $47.5 meg from iii,561 theaters back in 2014. It seems that the pic has reached the Christopher Nolan fan base, but not extended much across that. Remarkably, Pearl Harbor remains the tape holder for biggest opening weekend for a World War 2 movie, with the $59 one thousand thousand it earned back in 2001 (equivalent to roughly $93 million with today'south ticket prices). Weekend Wrap-Up: State of war Goes Well for Apes Earning $56.26 million
July 18th, 2017
The weekend box part chart didn't hold a lot of surprises. State of war for the Planet of the Apes earned showtime place with a slightly better than predicted event of $56.26 million, while well-nigh of the rest of our predictions were as well shut plenty to be considered victories. Overall, the box part plummeted 21% from last weekend reaching $163 million. This was also a little lower than the same weekend concluding twelvemonth. The emphasis is on "little", as it merely dropped by 0.062% or about $100,000. On its ain, this would exist nothing to worry well-nigh. However, 2017's atomic number 82 over 2016 has completely evaporated and the year is now 0.19% or $12 million behind last twelvemonth's pace at $6.21 billion to $6.22 billion. We've lost near $200 million this summer compared to last yr and I don't meet that turning around whatever time presently. More...
Weekend Estimates: Apes Height Chart, Helped by Big Spider-Man Drib
July 16th, 2017
A weekend approximate but ahead of our prediction for State of war for the Planet of the Apes, and a i but below our prediction for Spider-Human being: Homecoming ways there's a clear winner at the box office. State of war will come up in with $56.five million, per Trick'due south Sunday morning approximate, while Homecoming will finish second with $45.2 1000000. More...
Weekend Wrap-Up: Spider-Homo has Wondrous $117.03 one thousand thousand Opening
July 11th, 2017
The weekend box office chart held few surprises. Every film in the top five was shut to our predictions, while the tiptop 2 films were a footling stronger. This includes Spider-Human being: Homecoming, which pulled in $117.03 million during its opening weekend, making information technology the second fastest debut of the summer. (But Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is ahead of information technology in that regard.) Despicable Me 3 held on better than most films this summertime and volition become a monster hit thanks to its international numbers. Overall, the box role rose by 22% from last weekend hit $206 million. Unfortunately, this is still 5.1% lower than the same weekend last year. Earlier the summertime began, 2017 had a $200 million lead over 2006. That lead is now down to just $13 million at $v.95 billion to $v.94 billion. This lead could be completely gone by the weekend. Weekend Estimates: Spider-Man Comes Home to $117 One thousand thousand Weekend
July 9th, 2017
A $117 million opening weekend is pretty much all Sony could ask for from Spider-Man: Homecoming. It'due south the second-all-time debut for the Spider-Man franchise, if you ignore the effects of inflation, and makes it nigh certain that the franchise volition break its unfortunate streak of earning less at the domestic box role with every new outing. With, reportedly, a more constrained budget—this is the least expensive Spider-Man motion-picture show, adjusted for aggrandizement—profitability looks assured, and Sony's partnership with Disney looks equally though information technology'south paying off. More...
Fri Estimates: Spider-Man has $50.v million Reasons to Celebrate its Homecoming
July 8th, 2017
Spider-Man: Homecoming dominated the box office on Friday and in a pleasant surprise, it beat predictions with $50.5 1000000 during its opening 24-hour interval. Its opening mean solar day vs. its previews is almost identical to Guardians of the Milky way Vol ii, which would put the film on pace for $130 million over the weekend. Spider-Human being: Homecoming did earn improve reviews, while both movies earned a solid A from CinemaScore, and many more kids have no school on Monday compared to when Guardians debuted. All of this should help its legs. On the other manus, Homecoming could take a bigger Fanboy Effect, as Spider-Human is a much more established character. Because of that, I'grand going to be a little more cautious and predict a $125 million opening weekend. This is still simply fantastic and the but downside is Sony and Disney have to piece of work together to brand this work in the long term. This is Sony'southward second all-time domestic opening of all time. (Spider-Man three is the simply 1 that beats it.) It could open with more last yr's number one domestic striking for the studio, Ghostbusters, earned in total. Sony has a lot of reasons to work with Disney to proceed Spider-Homo in the MCU. More than...
Thursday Night Previews: Spider-Homo Swings into Theaters with $15.4 million in Previews
July 7th, 2017
Spider-Man: Homecoming needed to make more than than Wonder Woman during its previews in order to match it at the box office. Wonder Woman's audience was unduly female person, especially more than mature women. This demographic tends to help a film's legs at the expense of its opening weekend. And so if Homecoming only made a fiddling more than than the $11.0 1000000 Wonder Woman made, it would fail to crack $100 million over the weekend. Fortunately, it crushed that figure with $15.4 million on Thursday night. This is the third-best figure for previews this year, behind just Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 ($17.0 million) and Beauty and the Brute ($sixteen.3 meg). Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is the better comparison, as the audiences for the 2 films match up virtually perfectly. If Homecoming does match Guardians' legs, then it will earn only over $130 million over the weekend. I call up the fact that this is the sixth Spider-Human pic and third incarnation of the character in fifteen years will injure its legs a little chip, but $125 million is the new goal to aim for. The simply downside here is backside-the-scenes, as the character is being shared by Sony and Disney and I'm not sure how long they tin piece of work together. More than...
Weekend Predictions: Spider-Homo's Coming Home to the MCU
July 6th, 2017
Spider-Man: Homecoming is the only film opened wide this weekend and that should assistance information technology dominate the box office. In fact, it should have the biggest opening since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. The competition will put a dent in Despicable Me 3's box part during the weekend, but all the same, it will likely break even sometime over the weekend. This weekend last yr had The Secret Life of Pets at the superlative with just over $100 million, while there were 4 other films earning $10 one thousand thousand or more. Spider-Human: Homecoming should pinnacle The Secret Life of Pets, but the depth this year won't exist as expert. If 2017 does lose the twelvemonth-over-year contest, then its lead over 2016 could evaporate completely. More than...
Home Market Releases for June 13th, 2017
June 12th, 2017
It's a good week, but a shallow weak. The biggest release of the week is The Lego Batman Picture show, which is besides 1 of the best. In that location are a couple of other big releases that are must haves, like Dark Matter: Season 2, but the size and quality quickly driblet-off after that. Every bit for the Pick of the Week, the John Wick: Chapter Ii Blu-ray Combo Pack claims that title. More...
2014 - Vacation Gift Guide - Part I
November 26th, 2014
This Thursday is Thanksgiving, which ways this is Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and a ton of shopping. It also means the first installment of our Holiday Gift Guide. Over the next calendar month, we will talk near TV on DVD releases, independent releases, foreign language releases, classics, etc. simply this week we start with Major Flick Releases. These are first run releases, franchise box sets, etc. In some ways, this is meliorate than terminal year, as at that place were a wider number of big releases that would make groovy gifts. All the same, in other means it is much weaker. I can't think of a single big franchise box set that came out this yr. In that location are some smaller ones, like the Halloween Box Set, merely while the franchise has lasted ten installments and 30 years, how many can you actually say are worth repeated viewing? Fortunately, in that location were plenty of bully films to come out this twelvemonth, starting with what is currently the biggest hit of the year. More than...
Weekend Wrap-Up: Godzilla Helps 2014 Climb Dorsum on Top
May 20th, 2014
I idea Godzilla would be a monster hit. I mentioned that possibility in the monthly preview and the weekend predictions. Still, I was in the minority and I reduced my expectations. That turns out to be a mistake. Godzilla opened with $93.19 million over the weekend, which is a meliorate opening than The Amazing Spider-Man 2 managed, just it wasn't quite up to Captain America: The Wintertime Soldier. It also helped the overall box function soar to $178 million, which is 30% more than than last weekend. More chiefly, it was xvi% more the same weekend last yr. 2014 is now ahead of 2013 past a margin of $185 million or five.3% at $iii.66 billion to $iii.48 billion. More...
Weekend Wrap-Up: Neighbors were Louder than Expected
May 13th, 2014
Neighbors got off to a much faster start than expected, equally did many of the top 5 films. The Amazing Spider-Human 2 cruel more than 60% during its sophomore stint, just that was expected, at least information technology was inline with my expectations. Overall, the box office still fell from last weekend, but by 11% to $137 1000000, which isn't as bad as it could have been. Information technology was down 14% from the aforementioned weekend last twelvemonth, but that'southward a huge comeback from what information technology was terminal weekend, so in a small mode, it is a chip of a victory. Year-to-appointment, 2014 has pulled in $three.45 billion, putting it 5.4% ahead of 2013's pace. That's down from its pinnacle, but even if 2014 loses next weekend and the weekend after that, 2014 should withal remain alee of final year's pace. More...
Weekend Predictions: Volition Neighbors Have a Good Opening?
May eighth, 2014
It could be an interesting weekend at the box office as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is expected to fall far plenty that Neighbors could win the box office race. That certainly would be a boost for the new release's box function chances. Earning first place does provide a lot of free publicity. The other 2 wide releases coming out this week are not expected to be major players at the box role. I've heard some fizz that Mom's Night Out could be a sleeper striking. On the other hand, Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return might not open up above the Mendoza Line. This weekend final year, Iron Man iii led the way with $72.53 one thousand thousand, which is more than than all three wide releases will make. In fact, last yr's second place motion-picture show, The Nifty Gatsby earning $50.09 million, which might be more than all three wide releases brand this weekend. On the other hand, depth will be better this time around and that should mitigate the situation a little flake. More...
Weekend Wrap-Upward: Spidey Stiff, but not Amazing
May sixth, 2014
The summer blockbuster season has begun and it started on a mixed note. The Astonishing Spider-Homo 2 hands earned first place with more than than $90 million. An opening of more than $90 million isn't a bad number, simply it is the everyman opening three-day weekend for a Fri debut in the franchise. Worse still, the overall box function was just $153 one thousand thousand, which is substantially lower than last year's number one film, Iron Man 3, opened with. $153 million is 32% higher than last weekend, but the start of summer should be bigger than that. It is also 30% lower than the same weekend last year. You usually only encounter a turn down that sharp when there's a misalignment in a holiday weekend. Granted, 2014 is withal ahead of 2013 by a large margin (8.6% or $3.26 billion to $3.01 billion) and so we don't have to worry nearly 2014 losing that pb whatever time presently. This is just non a swell way to starting time the summer blockbuster season. More...
Weekend Estimates: Spider-Man Swings into Summer with $92 meg
May 4th, 2014
The modern tradition is that first weekend in May starts the Summer season with a super-hero action pic. And Hollywood being the industry that lets no tradition go before it'due south beaten it to expiry, this year we start Summertime, on the first weekend in May, with the release of The Astonishing Spider-Human 2. Now, the most astonishing fact almost the Spider-Man franchise is probably that every movie has washed worse at the domestic box function than the one earlier it, even without adjusting for inflation. This is some other tradition that looks like it might continue, with Spider-Man two opening with $92 million—without doubt a very practiced debut, only one that points towards a last box role around $250 million, or maybe a shade higher. With The Amazing Spider-Man having made $262 million in 2012, a fourth direct reject for the franchise looks like a 50-50 bet right now. More...
Weekend Predictions: Will Spidey Swing into Action?
May 2d, 2014
It is the official opening of the summer blockbuster flavor and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hopes to become the summertime off to a fast start. On the positive side, it is the latest installment in one of the almost popular comic book franchises. On the negative side, its reviews are below expectations and below the overall positive level. There are no other new releases to pick up the slack should this film neglect to alive up to lofty expectations at the box role, although The Other Woman should still do well in a counter-programming part. Last yr Iron Human being 3 dominated the fashion with $174.14 1000000 during the opening weekend. There's no way The Astonishing Spider-Man ii will match that this weekend. There is a small chance The Amazing Spider-Man 2 won't make that in full. More...
2014 Preview: May
May 1st, 2014
It has been a great year so far and Apr was once again a strong month. The box office was led by Captain America: The Wintertime Soldier, as it became the second motion-picture show of the year to reach $200 million, while Rio two is on pace to become the seventh $100 million hitting of the year. Big picture, 2014 has already hit $3 billion, which isn't a record for this time of the year, but it is $250 1000000 ahead of 2013. That streak ends in May. Don't get me incorrect. At that place are six films opening this month that at least have a shot at $100 meg and ii of those should earn more than than $200 million and there are two others that at least have a shot at that milestone. Leading the way is The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is looking to summit The Winter Soldier and become the second biggest hit of the year so far. Its main competition this calendar month is Ten-men: Days of Hereafter By, while Godzilla also has a shot at $200 million. Unfortunately, this month terminal year, Iron Human being 3 earned more than $400 million, while 2 other films took in $200 million and vii films in total reached the century mark. That is going to be really hard to replicate this year and 2014 will likely lose some of its pb over 2013. Fortunately, 2014 has such a large atomic number 82 that unless the box office really slumps, it will end the month with at least a pocket-sized lead over 2013. More...

Co-ordinate to Amazon, the top iii best selling new releases of the week are a play, a film considered one of the biggest box office bombs of all fourth dimension, and a yoga do DVD.
